Tight Remote Control

I have a 20 Walkaround with a (bought new) 1998 175 hp Evinrude with a binnacle mount, single lever control (built in tilt switch). A problem I have lived with for a number of years-----even with the prior motor, is that the control is really hard to move---either forward or reverse-----either in gear or in neutral. But, when I disconnect the cables at the motor, the control works smooth AS DOES the motor levers when I move them by hand. The remote was dealer installed, and I'm pretty sure he didn't use OMC.

Can anyone shed some light on this ?---I sometimes run other boats and it's shuc a pleasure (and safer) to have a smooth control. THANKS.

Re: Tight Remote Control

Sometimes the cables start to wear internally. when you add the little friction from the control box and motor, the control feels like it is binding, if you disconnect the cable at the motor and put some light pressure on the cable end (just with your hand) and try the controls, you might see how just a little pressure makes a big difference. you may need new cables.

when you disconnect at the motor it takes part of the tension off the cable bend, too many or sharp bend in the cables, cause them to bind.

I think tash got it...to many or too sharp bends in the cable. Especially if it makes a S curve.

If it's not that, then a bad cable.
