Tight coupler

I bought a new coupler for my trailer that I am refurbishing. I increased the size to a 2" coupler because I already have a 2" ball. I haven't installed the coupler because it seems too tight on the ball when attached. It won't lean down (go below parallel) at all. This nut on the latch is already as loose as it can be and still remain fully threaded. It is a coupler kit from MasterLock
It seems like it will be a problem when backing down a ramp or over a steep driveway/bump. Has anyone else experienced this. Thanks.

Re: Tight coupler

If you haven't installed it yet, how do know it won't pivot properly. Depending on the size of the boat there will be about a ton or more of force pivoting the the coupler on the ball. You could not tighten the nut enough to prevent that from happening.

Re: Tight coupler

Its just a 13' Boston Whaler. Maybe a 2" ball is too much for it then?

Re: Tight coupler

It doesn't matter if the boat weighs 50#. The tongue of the trailer acts as a very long lever with both the trailer and boat weight at the end of it. There is no way you can tighten that nut enough to prevent this thing from pivoting. Don't make a problem where there isn't one.

Re: Tight coupler

It should be fine. You don't want to back that nut out to loose either.
You want it snug so there is little to no play in the coupler.

Something i do is grease the ball every so often....keeps it quiet and helps prevent wearing grooves in the ball...
