I want to start off by saying thank you to everyone on this forum. I've been browsing this forum for 6 months and have learnt alot already.

I am new to the boating world and just purchased a 1988 Celebrity 210 open bow. It has the 5.7 mercruiser with a 4 barrel quadrajet Carb. Its also got the alpha 1 out drive.

Now to my question. The boat has a ticking noise every couple of seconds from idle to about 1/4 throttle. I was wanting to know if someone had any idea of what it could be and how to check it. The boat runs awesome across the water at 41mph and the motor sounds great. I won't be home till Friday so I'm just trying to make a good check list of things to go over.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Re: ticking noise

What is the oil pressure. Sometime the rocker arms will clatter if the oil is too thin.

Welcome to iBoats.

If you could isolate the noise, that would be great. Post a youtube video of it as well. Ticking noises could be a multitude of things from a terrorist planted bomb to a noisy valve, or even a sad bearing.

Get yourself one of these at Harbor Freight or similar store and start listening to all the parts while engine is running. Makes it a lot easier to isolate the ticking location.

I cannot honestly tell you what the oil pressure is. It has a led gauge system that has went south. I will get a gauge hooked up this weekend and report back. But it doesn't really sound like lifter or rocker tapping. Its coming more from the port side bottom rear of engine.

Probably the exhaust flappers flapping.

How can I check the exhaust flappers?

I have a scope. Guess I didn't think of getting it out to help determine where sound was coming from.
