Ive been reading about installing a clamshell type raw water pickup for my volvo 151. I was wondering if anyone has done this and what they think of the benifits vs the cost.
Any input would be great, where to buy, where you installed it, how well it worked.

Thanks

I've concidered this as well.

I'd also be interested in hearing others opinions.

What is your motivation to do this? You can buy the hardware on iboats.:)

Motivation, I like to tinker with things. Right now I am working on cleaning up my boat and doing some reconstruction of the floor. Just thought It would be a good time to do it if I was going to.

There won't be any advantages on that small an engine. The pickups in the drive and hose size are enough to keep a V8 or even 6 cylinder diesels cool.
The disadvantage would be trying to hook a hose up to it to run in the driveway. Much easier to just put some muffs.

I was just speaking with a local boat mechanic about some overheating issues. Specifically, from air being sucked into the outdrive at various spots. He told mentioned the thru hulls. I just saw him on friday.

I thought is seemed like a viable option to tearing the drive apart and replacing all the worn out parts.

You can buy the intake and shut off valve for around $150 on this site.

Drill the big hole in the bottom and glue it and screw it.

Thats helpful when you own an old boat.:D

How's the rest of that boat coming?

Not bad,

Replaced carb with single weber kit after checking compression 185 on all cylinders. Runs really good now.
Sanded, polished and waxed entire hull
Pulled stern drive off and took apart. Looks pretty good. I put a little oil on the gears and they spun freely.
Taken all wood trim off and sanded and stained.
Fixed supports over fuel tank in floor, were pretty soft. Floor itself is good.

Things to do:
completely reseal sterndrive
Get stern drive on with new bellows
Finish resurfacing the swim platform
Build a stretch tarp to fit on the snaps already on the hul
Work on rust on trailer(doesn't look to bad)
Put in a real livewell, the one in it looks like it is just a cooler.

next year
Replace Carpet - wife wants it done this year, but I don't feel like it.

Put in water and see if it actually floats...LoL

So far it has been a pretty fun project. Im a stay at home dad, so I am always looking for something to do while the kids are outside playing.

Sounds like you've got it under control. One thing I noticed about the hull was there no stress cracks and it does have a great swim platform. My kids love the big swim platform on our boat.:)

I hope the outdrive works out for you.

Good Luck!!!
