Bought a Marlin 26 with 454 .

the engine has been swapped from a merc to a Chevy 454. The exhaust does not line up with thru hulls . How can I connect it ? Do they make a flexible enough pipe?

welcome aboard.

do you want the easy answer or the correct answer?
boat exhaust is not flexible pipe. at the least, its hard elbows and high-temp rubber exhaust hose.

the boat most likely came with a small block (hence the narrower spacing)

your choices are as follows

  • you can modify your transom by moving the exhaust (pull the motor, do some fiberglass work, finish it, etc)
  • you can get custom S-pipes made
  • you can get custom captains call diverter elbows made.
  • you can get custom marine headers made.

or you can run it like it is

I don’t know the history off the boat to be honest . I just don’t see this big of a boat having a small block . I definitely want thru hull . What do you think would be the easiest way to achieve ? The elbows or headers ? Where is the best place to buy headers or elbows?

It looks like the boat did come with a small block judging by how the outlets in the transom are set up. I think you’d need to get the pipes made custom to mate up with the thru hull exhaust.

two 45s on each side with marine hose in between to make them meet up . The post above gave some links or places like michigan motorz will have them.

Have you had a boat with thru hull exhaust before? A lot fo folks end up hating it after a while .

Yes I have. I know it’s loud but I was going to just cap the bottom so I could always hook it back up if I wanted it. Could I just go to a muffler shop and have them make me a piece of exhaust pipe shaped like an S or does it need to be marine rubber exhaust

Metal pipes can be made up by a muffler shop but you have to use proper marine High Temp hose to make the connections.

no, a car muffler shop wont work, most are crush benders which have an 8" internal bend radius. you need mandrel bent marine exhaust pipe with a tight radius in the 4-5" range. the material which is normally 316 stainless. however if you are in fresh water, 304 would be acceptable. you will need the ends beaded to retain the hoses.

seriously doubt you have room for two 45 degree elbows. maybe two 75 degree elbows or two 90 degree elbows.

bigger boats have had small blocks. if the boat was newer, it could have had an LS motor in it.

what is the spacing on the exhaust pipes out the transom?
32"? 33"? 34" ? 36"?

best place to buy headers is fully dependent on your pocket book. off the shelf units like Lightning, CMI, or DANA will run you about $2k a set - check out CP Performance and Hardin Marine for example. semi-custom units will be in the $3500 range, however custom headers would run you about what you paid for the boat if not more

other alternatives are going to something like EMI or Stainless Marine for one of their manifolds and having custom elbows made. I spent about a month working on the custom elbows and exhaust for my boat with a fabricator friend. Should I have had to pay a custom marine company for it, I was told it would have been in the $7500 range.

It might be good to do a bit of investigating into the engine's origin . . .

If it was an automotive (Chevy as you mentioned) then were the electrical and fuel system components (starter, alternator, ignition, fuel pump/carb) switched over to marine versions?

Probably the easiest thing to do about the exhaust would be to make a new set of holes in the transom.

I had never heard of these boats and found out information on another site I’ll post someone’s response .

it’s a 1989 marlin cearo 26

“There was only 18 of them made back in the day. Marlin was a popular west coast family boat line. In 1989 they ventured into the Performance line, built 18 Ceaero's but in 1991 company was purchased by Kal Custom and sold off in pieces. The Ceaero molds were sold to Magic boats, then there was some light changes and they were sold to Eliminator.”

The engine is a Chevy , checked the numbers on the block , it is a 454 out of a Chevelle. Yes everything is swapped over to marine. It runs amazing and will fly out of the water . just want thru hulls.

New holes and custom stainless caps for the old holes wouldn't be awful if fiberglassing and finish work isn't in the budget.
The problem with new holes, there is no other place to drill holes because of the steps on the stern of the boat , I’ll post a pic. I thing im just going to have to put elbows ..

I think I can buy 2 45s or 90s for each side and use existing rubber hose to cut and fit.

Not sure how you know that as the same 454 block that went into a chevelle, also went into trucks, boats, ambulances and other things.

Hope the core plugs are brass, and the cylinder gaskets are marine. Hope the cam is either Marine or Truck
