In the Warrior world we get alot of follows but no hits. I started last year to keep second pole as a follow up. I will either use a Lindy Tiger Tube or a(5") Hawg Dawg.

Muskie are territorial and will stay in same area after a follow. I will use a different presentaion and lure choice and throw back to same area.

Wonder if you do this when you hunt the Mouths after a miss has occured? In the gator world presentation is crucial and if she snubs her nose up at the first throw why waste another heave with same failure..If I have no takers I will move on but come back in an hour to same area.

Re: Throw Back Lure Option

Sure do throw a follow up at any missed strikes. I always have at least four poles set up with different baits in the boat every time I go out. I have one of those PVC rod holders mounted to the front of the console, it will hold four poles, is right there when I am fishin from the front platform. If I miss one it only takes a second to grab another rod and chuck it back at the fish. Sometimes it works sometimes it dont.

This method makes it easier when trying to find what the fish want on a particular day, saves time. If I get to the Ohio roundo I'll show you my set up

I do that also.
I will have several rods and they will all have different baits on them from spinner baits, yep my favorite, to 10" worms.
I also like to throw topwater.
If I miss a strike on topwater, throw a spinner bait back in there and will catch that fish biggest part of the time. If not throw that big zoom in there and see if they want that.

I use one for live bait, a spare rigged with a topwater, and occasionally a spare set up with a plastic worm. I try to leave nothing to chance. :) Usually, when fishing with live bait, I park it in the rod holder and go up front to cast with one of the others.

Kinda like a smorgesboard. :p

When we're dragging lures and/or ballyhoo or even drifting, we usually have a rod rigged and ready for split second deployment to pitch back to a follower dolphin, or to throw to some schoolie dolphin who are hanging around under some type of floating cover.. May be rigged with a jig, spoon, lure, live or chunk of bait...

Dolphin like to follow their hooked buddys right up to the boat... :)

Generally, from watching the pros on tv, I try to through a slower and/or deeper lure back at a fish. Seems you all are forming a consensus.

I love to fish topwater baits, jitterbug, buzzbaits or bulge a spinner bait. After a missed strike I'll usually throw out a sluggo type bait and twitch it just under the surface. This has brought some vicious strikes! I also set up rod tubes on the front of my console but I have occasionally caught one of those rods on my backcast and that leaves a mess in a baitcaster that can only be cut out and re-spooled  :D

2 lines are not legal here but if they are where you fish muskie here's an alternative. Dangele a large live bait just under the boat on a rod with the bail open or drag set loose. If one follows but does not strike he may opt for the live bait at boatside. Sounds like a killer tactic given there propensity to follow clear to the boat and then refuse the lure.

My normal arsenal (for largemouth):

One spinnerbait (buzzbait early morn/late eve).
One crankbait or trap (topwater early/late).
Two jig or texas- or carolina-rigged worm/lizard.
One weightless or drop-shot fluke/slugo/finesse worm rigged weedless or wacky.

In case of short strikes on moving baits toss the soft-plastic jerkbait.
