I am replacing my 575 humminbird with a fancy furuno this winter and I will have to change transducers, and i may try to install a through hull transducer.
I always wondered if anybody ever installed one on an aluminum boat and if there is any opinion compared to having them on the stern.
thanks,rolmops

Re: Through hull transducers.

What fancy Furuno are you looking at? I wasn't aware they built a fancy piece of equipment. Rock solid, but certainly not fancy. ;)

My concern would be more boat the boats configuration rather than the materials its made out of. Thru hulls transducers are very large and require fairing blocks which can make trailer complicated if you don't use one of the tilted element designs. The tilted elements designs are very large and bulky. For instance, my B164 transducer is 5.38" in diameter and 4.67" tall. It smaller cousin, the B60, 3.75" diameter and 3.47" tall.

Performance wise, it's no contest between a thru hull and a transom mount. None of the usual mounting problems.

If you don't go with the thru hull, I would suggest P66 transom mount

I'm with Dingbat on this one, there isn't much comparison once you've had a thru-hull. I've seen the p66 Airmar do some pretty impressive things too which makes it (seemingly) ideal for your particular application.

Good unit but it was discontinued 6-7 years. I have one on my boat that I use as back up. Upgraded to the its replacement, the FCV 585 when it came out

If you are going to spend that much money I'd go with the FCV 620 digital over the analog FCV 582L in a heart beat.

I was thinking about the 585 but the $1280 price tag is a bit beyond my current budget.
Is the FCV 620 as good as the 582?

Better

As I noted above, I run a 585 with my old 582L as a back up. There is no doubt in my mind that the digital sounders (585 and 620) are a step up from the 582L.

Software wise, the 620 is the same unit as the 585. The difference between the two is the screen size and the power output. The 585 has 1kW RMS and the 620 has 600 W RMS just like the 582L

BTW: There is a reason why they have knobs instead of buttons on the front panel, you need them. Furuno sounders are not known for their user friendliness. If you want a fish finder that you turn on and it works w/o user input, a Furuno sounder might not be for you.
