throttle tension adjustment

The throttle tension in the control box for my new 70 hp Yami is too loose to keep the rpms above about 2500 or so without holding the throttle up. According to the manual, it's a simple adjustment after removing the control box cover. However, after taking out the four small screws that hold on the cover, it still does not come off. Manual doesn't say anthing else that I could find. It appears that there may be some pins or something else holding the cover on, but I didn't want to force anything. Anybody help?

Re: throttle tension adjustment

BoneDaddy,

If yours is a side mount control box & the shift lever is mounted on the starboard side of the box, you need to remove the lever to get inside. On most control boxes there is an allen screw on the port side of the box... loosen the screw about 3/4 of the way & then tap it gently to drive the lever off the other side. Control box halves should then separate.

Good Luck!

Re: throttle tension adjustment

The service rep referred to it as a binacle, and it is not side mounted. It mounts on the top of my center console, Maverick Mirage HPX-T, and the shift lever is on the port side of the control box. So, how do I get into this one?

Thanks,
Bruce

Bonedaddy, I don't koow your binacle control specifically, however , I have yet to see a late model one that required dis-assembly of control box to adjust tensioner. Most binacle controls have a small hole that is exposed when you move throttle lever in forward position.Inside this hole is a screw actuator for adjusting throttle tension.

OB:
I'll check, but according to the manual and the service rep at the dealer, the control box cover has to come off and the throttle tension screw is located at the aft end of the control box. That's why I'm stuck.

Bonedaddy, if manual and service rep says it's inside I suppose they're right.Seems like a hastle just to adjust tensioner.Did he have any tips on the cover removal after you removed bolts with no success?

Re: throttle tension adjustment

Unfortunately the dealer's 3 hours away. I haven't had a chance to call him back during the work day, hence the forums at night! Once I get it figured out I'll try to remember to post the solution.
