Throttle / Remote Control question - need help please

I posted this in the engine forum, but not sure that was the right place, so I'm cross posting it here. Please forgive me if this is a problem :)

Please forgive me if this is not the right forum, but I didn't see one that fit much better (except perhaps the Wellcraft forum).

Anyway, I need a replacement throttle control (I believe its called a remote control??). Its a 1988 Wellcraft 220 and I don't know the part number. Would this be in the repair manual for the engine or perhaps the drive or some other manual? I've attached a picture with some items marked that I needed some additional input on.

Bear with me: (A-E are marked in the picture)
A = "bar" that slides in and out to allow throttle movement
B = Button to engage prop/drive
C = Brass bar from D to A
D = Top of throttle with push lever
E = Screws to adjust throttle friction and stiffness

The top of the throttle (D) is broken. I have taken it apart and verified that a piece of the plastic is cracked. (I would have posted the picture, but couldn't figure out how to get the size small enough).

Throttle Image

Questions/Comments:
1.) Apparently the "C" brass bar is supposed to move when you push the lever on the throttle and move the "A" bar to allow throttle movement. I can't see how this is supposed to work though (perhaps only because D is broken).
2.) How do I get "B" off/unscrewed??
3.) Apparently this throttle has been replaced because the screws in E are missing and actually aren't aligned correctly anyway.
4.) Where do I find the repair details and part number for this assembly? In the engine repair manual, the drive manual or some other manual? Its a quicksilver throttle assembly with the Trim swith and Trailer button to raise the drive up for trailering.

Any and all help is greatly appreciated! Please direct me to the correct forum if this is not the correct one.

Thanks again!

Wouldn't hurt to check eBay for throttle controls, too. Might be able to pick one up from someone who has updated their engine, wrecked a boat, or simply changed throttle styles....

chris, you have a 20 y/o controler, best just to totally replace it. you need one compatible to you engine. which you didn't mention, but i assume it's a merc. heres a link to replacements. if the cable have not been replace do them also.
http://www.iboats.com/Single_Lever_...1010146--view_id.243446--search_type.category

TD thanks for the link. Here is some more info with additional question:

I have a 1988 Merc 454 V8 7.4L.

Questions:

My current throttle has a trim switch AND a trailer button. The trim switch only allows trimming up to a certain degree. After that you have to use the trailer button to raise the drive up the rest of the way. If I buy a replacement controller without the trailer button, will the trim button raise the drive all the way (or high enough anyway) to trailer it?

Is there a good replacement anyone would recommend?

Would the new controller come with installation instructions? I assume it would.

How do I know which cables to get if mine need replacing?

How difficult is it to replace cables?

Is there any "gotchas" to keep in mind while doing the replacment?

Which manual should have the instructions for replacing the controller or cables? I have both the engine manual and the drive manual.

Thanks!

Re: Throttle / Remote Control question - need help please

Still have the questions above, but here are 2 throttle assys I am looking into.

Any advice?

I think this one is probably my best bet for easier installation/hook-up:
(Its the very first throttle assy listed)

Quicksilver Throttle

But this one I like better, but might have some features I can't use, and might be difficult to get hooked up? THoughts? (Its the 2nd throttle down the page)

Teleflex Controls

Again, your help is greatly appreciated.

this one has the right features with the TnT,and trailer. also say it works with the engine. look on the black sheath of the cables for a number stamped on them for thats the replacement number, most cables are fairly easy to replace, may have to remove a panel to get access. you can call the iboat 800 number for more info. they are great to work with

827270A49

Comes with 16 ft.(4.9 m) trim harness and trailer switch. All installations require a separate Ignition Switch and Throttle/Shift Cables to complete the installation. Power Trim connector is a traditional 4 pin Mercury connector. Start-in-gear leads are 2.41 ft long and have bullet connectors on the ends. Fits all MCM and Mercury/Mariner 3.4L outboards with external trim cylinders.

Valkyr - Haha, I'm having similar issues with the Quicksilver stick on my 1988 Sea Ray 230 Weekender w/5.7L Merc/Alpha

Your picture and notes are great! I had no idea those holes were for adjustment.

To replace this stick seems like a huge PIA and $$$. I just bought a 1989 Quicksilver Service Manual on ebay. The same seller has a 1990 version as well - I'm positive it contains the same info.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/1990...001QQitemZ110116613396QQrdZ1QQsspagenameZWD1V

This is the official repair manual that the dealers and shops use. It is very detailed with good diagrams, photos and exploded views. A must for anyone who insists on Genuine OEM quality parts. Approx. 150 pages.

Chapters include: Special Information, Standard Single Lever Full Gear Shift Control, Side Mount Control, Commander Panel Mount Control, Commander Side Mount Control, Commander 2000 Side Mount Control, Commander Console Mount Control, Commander 2 Lever Recessed Console control, Commander 2 Lever Console Control.

Mine is loose and just never has felt right. Hopefully this manual will shed some light on my problems, and provide detailed adjustment info.

Re: Throttle / Remote Control question - need help please

What is the difference between TRIM & TILT? My remote control has Trim and trailer button. The trailer button raises the drive higher after the trim up has reached its max. So I'm curious if the Tilt Button on the below controller is the same as the "trailer" button on my current quicksilver controller?

Plz hep me. :)

Teleflex Controller
Teleflex/Morse Part # CH1700-210010

Control, Single, Side Mount W/Trim/Tilt

* For single station use with nearly any engine
* Ergonomically designed handle with Soft Touch Grip and intuitive positioning all features
* Precise, smooth, positive action
* Trim in handle; push button warm up; neutral interlock prevents starts in gear
* Accepts virtually every type of OEM and 3300 type cable, including Mercury Gen II

Also if I wanted to buy Mercruiser Gen II Cables, do I need anything special to hook these up to the engine/drive area? (Like a converter or anything)

Re: Throttle / Remote Control question - need help please

Still looking for input on this issue (Where's Don and Bond-O when you need 'em?) ;)

Well I've got the old remote control mostly uninstalled. Still have one cable to get loose from the controller as its being a pain to get to. Had to drill the screws out as they had apparently been screwed in with some type of epoxy or something.

The throttle and shift cables look to be in good shape so I'm wondering if I could use one of these controllers with the existing cables? Mercruiser Type 600A Series Control Cables.

Teleflex has their manuals online. Here is the one for the Teleflex control I'm looking at:

Teleflex Manual

I'm going to order this one I believe unless someone can think of any problems?

Hmm...Well ordered the Teleflex remote control assy so we'll see how it goes.

I'm going to start a new thread (as this one has gotten messy with all my own replies ;) in the Mercruiser Engines forum as that seems to be the best place for it I guess.

Thanks for everyone's help.

Re: Throttle / Remote Control question - need help please

My problem is that when i got my boat and motor it ran fine (95 model 40 hp 2 stroke 4 cylinder merc.) shifter was stiff as all get out but ran fine when u hit the gas... last time I carried it out it wouldnt get much past idle speed. The gas cable wouldnt pull the throttle open very much. took the shifter apart but couldnt see anything wrong. The part A marked in the pic in the post had come out does this have anything to do with the shifter not pullling the gas out to open up the throttle cable. Also if it doesnt what could be my problem?
thanks Mike
