Throttle Problems

I have a 1988 Mercury 25hp with a tiller handle. My throttle no longer returns.<br /><br />When I am in gear and accelerate, the tiller handle use to have a tension in it so that the throttle would spring back to idle when I released the handle. Now, however, there is no tension in the tiller handle and when I release the handle the motor will run at the same pace.<br /><br />I have checked the linkages and they seem to be fine. I can push on the main cam linkage, and this will move the tiller handle back to idle (I do this with the motor not running), but it will not return on its own.<br /><br />Does anyone know if this problem could be caused by something in the tiller handle (which I have not yet disassembled)? Or can the problem be somewhere else?

I don't know how the throttle returned in the first place as there is no return spring it must have been the action of the magnets and the stator but the unit is working properly now
