Throttle Problems with Evinrude 135

I am new to boating. I just recently purchased a 1983 Bayliner Capri 1600. One of the previous owner’s swaped the original outboard for an Evinrude 135 (Model 135443 B). I took it to the lake for the first time yesterday. I experienced a few issues I was hoping someone might be able to help out on...

1. The warm up lever didn't appear to work consistently. I would lift it all the way (not very easy to lift) w/o the RPMs raising much at all.

2. The shifter was difficult to move forward and it was nearly all the way forward before the engine would get "gas".

I feel there are problems with either the throttle cable and/or the shifter. Should it be difficult to use the warm up lever? Should the shifter have to be all the way forward before it gets any power at all? It really seems like its either neutral or wide open. Anywhere between neutral and wide open doesn't seem to move the throttle.

I am new to boating all together, so I may not be using the correct terms.

I am wondering if this is normal behavior of an Evinrude? If not, where could I start on fixing - a new throttle cable? Shifter?

Any ideas would be great!

Thanks,
Michael Klein

Re: Throttle Problems with Evinrude 135

There is a throttle friction adjustment knob on the forward side of the control. It may help to loosen it. The warm up lever must be totally down in order to engage the throttle and gearshift.

The problem is more likely to be the cable. You should get a model specific service manual for your motor. Try Ebay or Kencook.com.
