I am taking Don S advice and I need to repair the throttle only button (the button does not move at all). I believe this will allow me to crank over the motor and give the engine throttle at the same. I am new to boats, but not new to mechanics.

I have a 87 Sunbird, 3.7L, merc470.

Can I repair the control lever or is it recommnended to replace the assembly. I use the theory do it right the first time.

How does the netrual lock out switch work? I would think that the switch cuts the motor if there is any throttle or does it cut the motor when the shift cable moves. I would assume the shift cable moving would the netrual lock out switch to cut the motor.

Do you have a schematic of your control?

I do not have a schematic of my control. I wish I did.

The button disengages the shift cable in netural and allows the throttle to be pumped to prime the motor and placed in a good position to allow the motor to be warmed up

There are service manuals for each type and brand of control DONT even think about trying to take it apart with out one :)

tommays

If I were to replace the control, what would everyone recommend?

Is a brand name to use that I should use, or can I use cheap one and get the same effect.

Thanks,
Shawn

Re: Throttle Only Feature Broken

For some closure, I replaced that throttle control and the engine started up in two cranks.

Thanks
