Throttle link too long?

This has always bothered me about my 1988 100 hp 2+2 motor. I have the throttle cable barrel all the way to the end to get the mark on the throttle cam to line up with the roller. This makes it really hard to get a full range of throttle. Could it be the early motors had a mistake?

Hi Dave....I'm new here, but I'll give it a shot anyway. I just woke up my '89
100hp from a six year sleep. I assume you're performing a link & sync. I adj.
the throttle cable barrel so that the cable is preloaded against the throttle
stop. Not real tight, you should be able to pull a piece of paper from between
the screw & the lever without tearing it. To line up the mark to the roller
center I either advance the throttle lever or remove the cable barrel from the
holder & advance the lever by hand. I measure the .010 with a feeler gauge from below such that when it's removed the roller has to roll a little. This always gives me a full throttle range from closed to wfo. I hope I didn't misunderstand your question!

Re: Throttle link too long?

Thanks. I am familiar with the procedure.

http://www.crowleymarine.com/mercury-outboard/parts/359_40.cfm

It's part # 21. I bent it to make it shorter. Seems to be fine now.

Another thing is I don't really understand what adjustment #6 is supposed to do. I guess it will be the idle stop when the throttle cable is disconnected but when is that?

BTW, Den. Better check your oil lines. Mine were crumbling. Had to replace all of them. I'm lucky I made it through the summer. These oil lines were a ticking time bomb. I can't believe how far out I was with these ready to go at any minute.

Yeah Dave I know what you mean, my oil line from the tank to the pump broke while sitting before the 6 yr. hibernation. After replacing the oil lines, I
rebuilt the fuel pump & replaced the water pump assy. Then I fired it up on the muffs, well no water from the tattle tale. Then the overheat warning went
off & the motor wouldn't shut off with the key. Thought the worst ,scored cyls., etc. So, in disgust I let it sit all this time to discover it was only a bad
warning module! Live & learn. Hope your fix works out!

Re: Throttle link too long?

Hey DDK65JAG,

Another thread got me to thinking about the job I did replacing the oil lines. I bled the system per the manual but while bleeding did fill the input hose it did nothing for the small hose between the oil pump and the fuel pump. It's still empty (I have not run the motor yet). I would think this would cause a period of no oil going to the carbs. Should I be concerned?
