throttle controls

I have recently purchased a 1989 ranger boat with a 100 hp mercury motor with it. With what little I know about boat motors we put it in the water and it would not shift into gear. I could rev it up but would not shift. The shifting throttle controls are quick silver. Was wondering if anyone had any suggestions or knew where I could find my throttle controls for a decent price and what not. Thanks

Re: throttle controls

Do you have the s/n of your engine?

Gerry

I will look tomorrow and get back to you. I found a few numbers on the throttle lines but haven't looked on motor. I was wondering when you switch out the controls if you usually change the lines out or if you can get away with just replacing the controls.

Re: throttle controls

Hi there hawkdome25, welcome to iboats!:)

First as a test you will want to separate the shift cable at the engine to see if you are able to move the cable using the shifter, if not remove the cable from the control unit to see if the cable moves easily. Also check the shifter while the cable is disconnected.

The numbers on the cable should help identify the cable type and length you may need to order. This video linked below should help.

Measuring a Control Cable - YouTube

Once you find your cable numbers you could try searching the numbers here at iboats for a match. cc17915

Hope this helps, good luck.:)

Re: throttle controls

Thanks for the helpful tips. When I purchased the boat we had it running in the garage and it went into gear then. As to why I think the controls are broke with the button engaged in neutral. It feels like there is a clip or spring in the controls that might be broke.I called a local dealer and they said to replace the controls so I figured I would go that route. Just didn't know if I should replace the lines with it but I have no way of checking the lines because I know the throttle is broke. Do you usually replace the lines with the controls. Does anyone know where I could get quiksilver controls for a reasonable price? I was quoted $350 by my local dealer. Thanks for the help!!

Is there any way of uploading pictures on this site so I can show you guys what I'm working with? If not I would be willing to email them to somebody if they are familiar with this situation.

Re: throttle controls

Your s/n comes up as:

MERCURY - (100 H.P. (1988 ))
Serial No: 0B330664 Model No: 1100412BD

Parts and Service Bulletin List for s/n 0B330664:

Here is a link to the Merc Controls manual:

Click on the Download button under View Document and when the next page opens, select Free Download.

Once you find your controls in the document, you can decide if you want to fix it or get a new one.

This link will also help with parts, once you identify which unit you have.

Re: throttle controls

I have had the controls looked at and confirmed they need replaced. Does anyone know where I can find the controls for my motor at a decent price used or new?
