Throttle Control Assy

I have a Mercruiser 120 hp with an alpha 1 outdrive 1983 model. I am installing a quickslilver Commander Classic Panel mount Control. Since the unit did not have cables attached, I am confused as to which way the shift cable mounts. Does the shift cable pull or push from the control unit? Thanks.
