throttle cable ends question for '72 johnson 50hp

I am ready for a new throttle cable to be ordered for my '72 50hp hydroelectric johnson.
I kept the ends of the bad cable that I cut off, and they appear to be like the 479 cable.
However, the 479 style cables are supposed to be for '79 and later OMC motors.
What's the problem? Am I mistaken? I haven't cut the ends off any other cables so they have to be to my '72 50hp. I'm just worried, because of what I've read says the 479 cable shouldn't be to my motor.
Anyone know for sure?

You are ordering from iboats, right? The pages clearly show the cables and differences. The ends are different on the 479 cables, especially the control box end, and do not come off. You need the pre-79 cable, which comes without ends. You use the ends that you removed from the old cable. I believe the pre-79 cable is type 400.

THat's the thing, I did look at iboats and several other sites, which all said the same thing, that '79 and later engines use 479. The ends of the cable I removed aren't removable. I actually have some 400 style cables someone gave a while ago,but since my ends aren't removable I couldn't use them.
Is it even possible that my motor uses the 479 cables?
Thanks,

OK, you got me confusulated. 1972 Hydro-Electric, right? And you are using the Hydro-Electric control, right? I suppose it is possible that somebody figured out a way to adapt the 479 cable to the control, but I've never had reason to attempt it. There is no problem at the motor end, if you can get the control end to work.

Hey, if they fitted the control with 479 cables and it works, go with it.

I sure would like to see the ends of the cables you are talking about. Could you post some pics? Especially on the control end.

I think I figured it out. It's the 400 cable as it's supposed to be. The cable end is secured by 2 allen screws in the controller, and I haven't looked yet, but I'm guessing the 2 screws in the big black end secures the cable in that end. Sorry for the wasted time. Somehow I had a 479 controller end laying around and thought it was to the 50hp.
ANyway, it looks like I might get to test the motor out tomorrow. Will let you know how fast it flies apart........ (It's the one with the ebay crankshaft and pistons in it, with new rings) I didn't know to heat up the piston before inserting the wrist pins, so it may be a sad day. I was careful with it, but could have warped or scuffed something.
Thanks for the help, either way!!!!!
