Throttle Cable Adjustment

I have a 1988 Nissan 70 hp with Nissan controls. The throttle does not engage in forward (gear engages just no throttle increase) until about half way through the range to full. Same thing but not as bad in reverse.

Also, it sounds as if my motor has a bit more to give even when the throttle lever is fully forward.

I've only had the motor for a couple of days and I am new to outboards..

Re: Throttle Cable Adjustment

Here are a couple things to check. Put the control lever in neutral. Now disconnect the throttle cable at the engine. While pulling on the cable end to remove slack, bring the cable end back up to the throttle lever. If the two do not line up perfectly, adjust the trunion (the threaded barrel on the cable) until the cable can be reattached without moving the throttle linkage. This must be a perfect alignment. Then remove the air box from the carbs. Move the throttle full open and check the position of the butterflies in the carbs. They must be perfectly horizontal. If not, you need to perform a link & sync operation specified in your service manual. That procedure is far too detailed to go into here. DO NOT adjust the throttle cable for this problem. That does not correct the issue. If the butterflies are perfectly horizontal, the engine should run at wide open throttle.
