I just purchases a boat with a 70hp Johnson. I want to make sure the shift cable and throttle cable are adjusted right. When I put it in reverse does not seem to move throttle much and in forward does not seem to be enough as well. I get lots of throttle in foreward but really have to push the throttle. There seems to be alot of movement before it actually gives it more gas. I just want to make sure the cable are adjusted correctly. I downloaded a service manual but it did not seem to cover this.

Thanks, I guess the service manual that I paid for and downloaded online is not the correct one as it does not have that. Any tips on how to do this?

There is usually more throttle movement in forward. You don't want the boat to jump really fast when you start. Adjustment is fairly easy. Put the throttle in neutral and go back to the motor. Remove the cables from the throttle and shifter. Then make sure the motor throttle is all the way back touching the idle adjustment screw. Adjust the cable barrel so there is just a slight amount of pressure pushing against the idle stop. Then adjust the shift cable barrel so its loose on the motor shifter no pressure either way pushing on the motor shifter. Thats it. There won't be as much throttle in reverse as forward and forward will take a longer push to go fast. By the way there is no cable adjustment in the remote control so no need to take that apart, unless to lube but that's not usually necessary.

Thanks, boat shifts great , so don't think I need to mess with that cable, the throttle does not want to return all the way back to the idle adjustment screw. Good to know about reverse guess that is normal then. The fast idle start does not seem to move the throttle mush either, but I think that is because the throttle is not returning all the way back to the screw, I can move the throttle back to the screw by hand and it has a nice idle. Everything is lubed. I Any suggestions?

Adjust the throttle cable barrel so there is just a very slight pressure pushing it back to the idle adjust screw.

If throttle does not move when you lift the fast idle lever , then the cable may be worn out internally.

Can someone advise how I might perform this adjustment on a 1972 Johnson?

Please start thread with your question. This is a very old and inactive thread. And ID what 1972 Johnson.
