the boat has been sitting for 5 years but I changed the impeller and fuel pump and she runs great on dry land, I have not put her in the water as of yet

What make and type of motor and or outdrive?
Depending on the control the "middle" button might be for throttle only.

Read the manual-----Or consult with friendly boat shop on how to operate this boat.

I pushed the middle knob on the shifter and nothing happened
you pushed it and did what?

the middle button is to dissengage the gear selection of the controls. you push the button and move the control lever for throttle only

and when you pull back to the center detent, it should reset. if it doesnt, you need to address your controls.

Just to add....you probably don't want it spinning while on the trailer/dry dock as it becomes a potential hazard for anyone next to it.

Float the boat and see if she goes into gear & moves under her own power.

Thank you braingcc,

thanks scott,
that was helpful i'll look into that and see how I can trouble shoot the controls of the boat and see how I can trigger something for it to get into gear.

Not trying to sound mean here but we're gonna need more details as to your last post...

Given your Bayliner is newer, it's probably got Mercury power. As Scott mentioned, when you press the center (pivot) button of the controls in and advance the lever, all it's doing is rev'ing up/down the engine until it reaches center again as the gear shift is disengaged. Kinda like pressing the gas pedal in your vehicle without first shifting into gear.

To get a boat into gear, typically speaking, there's a lever underneath the throttle handle itself which when depressed will let you shift into F or R. Advancing the throttle at that point will increase the speed in the direction you are headed. Akin to having a vehicle in D and pressing the gas pedal.

If its not going into gear, good chance the shift cable or shifter needs service given the age of your boat. A manual will help with that OR you can ante up $$$($) and let the marina do it.
