Throttle and shift cable

I have a 1987 140 hp Johnson and need to relocate the cables on the center console under the floorboard. My question has to deal with disconnecting the cables from the motor. Can I just disconnect the cables and reconnect them? Or is there a procedure that I need to follow so that I don't screw things up? I have two cables, and two screws on each cable. I'm as green (new and lacking knowledge) as they come when it comes to outboard engines so any help with kindness would be greatly appreciated. :D

Re: Throttle and shift cable

Welcome to iboats

Just disconnect the cables (shift and throttle), unplug your red plug and re-run everything. Now the catch is since you are re-locating the cables that the old ones may not be long enough.

Re: Throttle and shift cable

Bob_VT, First I would like to thank you for such a quick response to my post. I have measured the length and will have plenty of cable left. I'm not sure what you mean by "unplugging the red plug"???? maybe the positive cable to the battery? :)

Thanks again,

Howard

Is the electric start key switch incorporated into your control box? Isn't there a wire bundle that also exits the control box ?

The red plug is located inside the engine cover and has about 8-9 pins inside it. It is separate from the +/- Battery cables

Yes, you are correct to all statements. I will disconnect the red plug before I get started.

Thank you very much.

Yes that control plug carries the wires for your starting, your alarm and your tachometer. There may be additional wires that control your tilt/trim also bundled with that main line.

The + and - cables from the battery should be disconnected just for safety while you are working in there.

There is a definate proceedure but you may not have to go through all that if you don't turn the adjustment wheels on the cable at the engine end.

I would consider disconnecting them from the control end rather than the engine.
