Throttle and shift cable and control issue

My shift and throttle cables have rotted out so I am replacing both with new cables. I have an 1998 Evinrude 115 hp engine. I can shift into neutral (butterfly flaps completely closed) and shifting forward the engine shifts in forward gear and all flaps open at the same time.

My issue is going into reverse.... when going from full throttle to neutral then shifting into reverse the engine shifts in reverse but throttle will only go half way but does not move the throttle on engine. Half way is all I can move on the throttle. What adjustments can I make to fix this problem?

I would say you need to replace the cables and see what happens then. It could be your shifter is bad as well and not advancing the throttle cable when in reverse. When you have the shifter apart take a close look at it for signs of wear or damage and lube the hinge points accordingly.

Watermann, thank you for the response. I believe that I've fixed it.... the throttle lever assy knob was shifted too far one direction in the shift/throttle plate assy. Now I have a new question... going into reverse should the butterflies on the carbs be completely open? I'm getting a little less than half way.

The advancement of the throttle should be opening the butterflies equally whether in forward or reverse if adjusted properly. The linkage on the motor end doesn't know if its forward or reverse, just that there's advancement of the throttle by the cable.
