Throttle adjustment?

If I move my throttle slightly forward, it will switch into gear from neutral, but from there, I can push the throttle another 3 or so inches before the engine reacts, and from there on it is fine. I'm just wondering whether this is normal. For those 3 inches of throttle movement, nothing happens.

You have to remember you are doing 2 functions... you are shifting AND throttling.
Mine system behaves in a similar way. You dont want to be increasing the RPM as you shift. There has to be a buffer... thats what you are feeling. if everything feels tight I would not worry about.
