Three questions re reassembling Outboard

Hi Folks, I just removed the regulator/rectifier assembly on my 1995 Johnson 130 and am looking for advice on a few things.

1. What type of gasket sealer would be OK to use on the regulator gasket? The manual says to use an OMC brand, but I am hoping some type that would be available at an automotive store would work as well. Any suggestions? I have thoroughly cleaned the gasket surface.

2. The bolts holding down the regulator appear to have had a green substance on them. Pehaps some kind of Loc-Tite? Would Blue Loc-tite be OK, or should I not use any?

3. The sound deadening foam inside the cowling looks like it is deteriorating. Do you recommend removing it? My fear is that the foam may become a continual source of carburetor fouling. Looks like real job to scrape it all off.

Thanks for any advice. Scott

Re: Three questions re reassembling Outboard

1 - Use a sealer that is simply named "Gasket Sealer", available just about anywhere. It comes in a can with a small brush attached to its screw off cap.

2 - Best not to use loc-tite on those bolts as you'll want to remove them again sometime in the future. Use the gasket sealer mentioned above or grease.

3 - Without that sound deading foam, the engine noise will be deafening. You can purchase new foam at Wal*Mart, various linen stores, etc.

Re: Three questions re reassembling Outboard

Thanks joe,

I picked up some Permatex Aviation sealant and will use it on the gasket and bolts. The foam will get removed. I'll check out a fabric store for replacement.

Hope to fire the engine up and start working on de-pickling it this evening. It's been stored for two years, but was run for 15 to 20 mins by the previous owner when showing it to me. Supposedly the carbs were gone through (what ever that entailed) prior to getting stored. I will get some fresh fuel and drain the carbs to make sure there isn't any crap in them. It did run kind of rough at idle, but the fuel-oil mix was about double what it should have been. It is converted to pre-mix.

Is it a good idea to run some Sea Foam with the fuel initially? I will be using a small portable tank and it would not be difficult to mix up a Sea Foam / Gas batch. The engine is on a stand at this point in time and I won't be able to run it wide open afterwards as suggested in the 'Secret Files' Decarb info.

You didn't say if you already did it, but if you haven't replaced the impeller yet, do it NOW before you run it very long and create even more problems.

Re: Three questions re reassembling Outboard

I have ordered an impeller and it should be here next week. It will go in as soon as I get it. The engine does pump water pretty well right now, but as you suggested, I want to start with a fresh impeller. According to UPS Tracking, the rectifier/regulator should be here today! Love having a project to look forward to.
