Hi all I'm new to this board and have a few questions.
first I think it has a 4cyl mercruiser in it but I have no idea how to tell what it really is. second I was changing the plugs and the last plug broke and here's the weird part, the plug came out but the treads that were on the plug are still in the head any ideas how to remove this without taking the head off, Thanks for any input,
Jay

Re: Threads from the plug stuck in head.

S---s to be you. Normally I would use an easy out to remove threads stusk in a hole. An easy out is something like a screw with reverse threads. You put a hole in the center of what you are removing and screw in the device with the reverse threads. As it tightens into what you are removing you are loosening the peice you are removing because the threads are reversed. In this case however, I would be afraid the shavings from cutting the easy out threads would go into the combustion chanber and get stuch in there and damage the engine when it started. I sure hope some one else has a better solution. If not, I uess you'll get to pul off the head.

I'd try the Easy-Out method,........

Bring the Piston to up Just Short of the Top of the Exhaust Stroke 1st,...........
That way you can Blow the filings Out the Exhaust Valve with compressed Air, before you start the motor again......

If that doesn't work,.......
The Heads Got to come Off,+ go to a Machineshop............

Good Luck........

You could also try bringing the piston head up just short of the top as Bondo suggested and then stick a magnet thru the hole to retrieve any shavings.

along with the other suggestions, maybe a shop vac also??? Sounds a little scary to me, I'd probably pull the head to be on the safe side.

if you try an easy out use one of the square ones. if you tap a tapered round one it will swell the plug shell threads and possibly wedge it in so tight it wont come out, also soak it several days with PB blaster or sili-kroil. I have used torx bits tapped into the hole and a 3/8s drive ratchet to remove them.
