You guys have any thought on these? I was planning to use one on my 74 1500 due to the fact that mine didnt come with one. I have replaced the stator so I actually have the two leads now...the one on the motor originally had the wires corroded and not reusable. I will be doing this tonight if anyone doesnt see a problem with it. TIA.

Re: thoughts on radio shack rectifiers?

If you research past postings, some folks have issues with the <perceived> durability of the Rad Shack unit, but a new Rad Shack rectifier has gotta be better than none at all, I say!

Just be sure to make snug connections, mount/ground the rectifier properly, and if it's a metal-backed unit you should use some heat-sink compound between the rectifier's surface and a <clean metal> mounting area.

HTH & let us know how it works..........ed

Chris, Your motor was equipped with a rectifier from the factory. It might be located in the front starboard lower cowling. It orange or red.

The RS rectifiers are vastly superior to the OEM Part. They have four connections, so you must ground the -DC terminal to the cowling or cowling support. The two stator leads go on the AC poles of the rectifier and the red battery goes on the +DC pole.

thanks guys. What is the 3 wire unit next to the power pack on the back brace? It has 2) yellow terminals on the otside and 1) red terminal in the center. There are three threaded holes molded into the power head on the lower right(from behind)side beside the lower carb. I assume this is where the rectifier should be.

Re: thoughts on radio shack rectifiers?

Chris, Merc moved the rectifiers around over the years. My '73 had the large rectifier in the right lower front cowl. My '77 Merc had the small black rectifier mounted under the powerpack.

It sounds like you have found yours. I would mount the RS version under the powerpack, to the right side. Pick any mounting hole. Make sure the -DC connection is well grounded.
