Not new too this site , boating long time , Every boat I owed power was
IOs Mercruiser or Volvo Penta
over the years many helpful responses from the moderators
My last boat was a 30 footer with twin Volvo Penta IOs ,
SOLD in August -
Think I made a decision , Downsizing
Back too a walk around cuddy trailer fishing boat that I can keep home

Best times with my 21 ft Laguna fishing off shore or trailering too Keys or other ports few days with kids and now grandkids

Looking at a 2001 Cobia 23 feet , trailer walk around cuddy

Motor is a 2001 Yamaha 200 HP = 2 stroke -300 hours
I know nothing about OBs , Anything I should look for ?
Is that 6 cylinder ? if I do compression test what should it be and is it done the same as IOs
Adding oil ? is that done each fuel fill up , whats the process
I do want too get motor and hull checked out , before deal done and have too locate somebody. In my area I used a few mechanics but they are too busy too ask them too take a day off and check out boat Boat is over 100 miles from home
GOt too find a local guy too area were boat is ?

What model Yamaha 200?
Saltwater or HPDI?

Just keep the oil tank full. Couple sizes of tanks (gallons) out there

The boat is rated to 250 Hp. At 200 hp your a little light on HP. Trim tabs and a decent prop are a must

Awesome motor..."bulletproof" is how they are referred to in my neck of the woods.I bought exact motor a few years ago and absolutely love it.I have always been a 2 boat owner .over 30 years of mercruiser i/o's on bigger boat and Evinrude outboard on fishing boat.I never owned a Yamaha before.I checked the motor out myself and could not be happier with it.First and formost is a compression test. All readings should be similar or within 10-15 lbs.Mine were within 5 lbs.Inspect the plugs upon removal. Then I removed bottom drain plug on the lower for just a split second. No water should come out and lube should not be blackish. If it is a magnet plug, stick your pinkie in the fill hole and inspect plug for excessive metal shavings. Now its time to put muffs on it and run the motor. It should start right up and have a medium monitor stream.Let it idle for a while and pay attention to the temp gage (if there is one).I didnt have a gage so I got a temp gun and checked every inch of the head for similar and not hot temps. As I stated I am very happy with this motor.I have found the maintenance to be very user friendly.Any semi capable person can perform the maintenance on this motor.I have replaced main fuel filter,VST fuel filter and fuel pumps and water pump.Outside of the cost of the VST filter, all parts were priced reasonably and easily installed .My 200hp is pushing a Grady White Adventure 20ft which is a very heavy walk style around boat.I would assume the 23 'Cobia is similar weight .The 200 pushes the boat very easily and tops out over 40mph.Typical cruising is 22 mph at 3400 rpm.Any other questions, please ask.Charlie

very strange that the OP does not know what model he has, but you say you have one just like it

It's the innerweb! Amazing place.

Got a problem that a Yamaha Master Mechanic cannot solve? Someone on the innerweb knows exactly what part number needs to be replaced.

Hell, folks got solutions even when there are no problems.
