Don't think you would want to do that trip with a McGregor............

They have a poor reputation for safety here in VT on Lake Champlain but, there are many around.

Apologies to any MacGregor owners, but here goes anyway...

I've sailed a 26 on Botany Bay... it was okay but didn't point as high as most, even our Heron dinghy pointed higher, she was pretty slow and wishy-washy on the helm and was a bit "rolly-polly" in the moderate swells we experienced that day. I don't think she'd be a good seaboat but we didn't venture out of the heads. Like most compromise boats she didn't do anything well, but to be honest I was slightly underwhelmed under sail and definitely didn't like her behaviour in a following sea under power.

wow, thanks for that input. Mcgregor sounds attractive due to its retractable keel, i mostly sail lakes. but as noted, everything about it is a compromise. i'll keep researching.

Re: thoughts about McGregor sb

I have sailed a Mac 26d for the past 10 yrs on the Connecticut river in Mass. The boat is light and fast, the dagger board mod is the quickest mod they made, mine is a 1989 and in mint cond. There's a modification for the rudder that makes the steering very nimble. I race weekly in my club with about 15 other boats, mariners, kels, balboas and a couple others. I am amazed at how fast it is against these other boats but with a handi cap of 92.6 it should be. The pointability of the D model is unreal, nobody can follow me and we have taken the season championship 8 of the last 10years. I also race a Flying scot in another class so I have a bit of experience. That being said I think the Mac is the perfect boat for my area the water is shallow the wind is seldom over 20 knots, it's tender and light so I think big water would be a challange. I do know of a couple owners who trailer from here down to Fl. in the winter and wait for a good weather window and skirt across to the Bahamas for a month or so, retirees. With the queen size berth my wife and I have been more than comfortable on overnights. All in all for a cheap light weight boat it has been great for us.

You guys are talking two different Mac's..The old 26 was a good sailer.......the new mac with the short stick and 40 horse engine is not...but neither would be a good choice for blue water.........IMHO.....

You're right, they're different boats. I think with the newer Mac's they tried to lean more towards the powerboat and the sailing side suffered but there are plenty of older ones on the market and I think for fairly protected waters they can't be beat. I wouldn't take mine to blue water either but know several guys who sail offshore here in the north east, but man it's gotta be a challange, not too enjoyable to me.

my supplier just told me of someone herein N.Texas that races Mac's, inland lakes, and wins championships against j-boats and keels. yes its an older model and as the saying goes..."know your boat."

To clarify my earlier post the MacGregor I sailed was a 2008 26 with a F50 outboard.
