Where do we draw the line between what we want and what we really want, at what point do we decide that it is not worth it to go after what we really want, and how do we know if it is truly worth it?

I think it probably depends what you use to draw the line.....a dry erase marker ~or~ one of those "sharpie" markers which are darn-near permanent. ;)

the sooner you realize that you can't have what you want, the sooner you sink into depression - I mean reality, and the easier it gets to muddle through with the mundane.

I find no meaning in this "question", GF. Perhaps different words or an example would help.

those lines are always moving, somedays things seem way too far out of reach and others you think you can almost touch them.

actually for me i have a list of things i want to do and buy and places to go. somethings get moved, somethings get removed and somethings get done. then it gets revisited and revised.

when you stop dreaming of your next adventure/purchase/accomplishment, you stop living.

Take some time and read about Goal Setting....... you will find that the MOST successful people in the world use goal setting as the target.

While you may not achieve every goal you set it is a worthwhile method of working towards something.

When you think you really want something take a break and have a soda..... flush the thought out of your mind for 30 minutes and see how you feel..... gives you time to do some long term thinking.

Re: Thought of the day.

There once was a teacher, whose principal feature
was hidden in quite an odd way.

Students by millions, or possibly zillions
surrounded her all of the day.

When finally seen
by her scholarly Dean
and asked how she managed the deed,
she held up three fingers and said, "All you swingers
need only to follow my lead.

To rise from a zero to big campus hero
to answer these questions you'll strive:

Where am I going?

How shall I get there?

and How will I know I've arrived?"

As far as bigger things like career, relationship, wealth, fame, etc...not little stuff such as a TV or that fancy GPS with side scanning capability.

Ah, now I understand.

Yes. Dr. Mager's poem fits well here, but an even better "answer" is in his book, Goal Analysis. In it he shows us how to decide exactly what we want, what we have to do to get it, and how we will know that we have done so. He focuses on objectivity, what we can see and count or measure, rather than vague descriptions of feeling.

Though Dr. Mager's field is education, his strategies exactly match the popular "Management By Objectives" fad of the 70s.

I developed and taught several seminars on managing our lives by objective measurement in those days.

Guess goal setting is necessary. But when you do achieve all the stuff you really wanted then you end up with a garage full of junk like I have. This is why garage sales were invented.:)
