Thought I spun the prop

I have a mercury 850 and got into the water last week, switched into gear, and heard a bump similar but a little louder than what I hear whenever I put it in gear. But this time, nothing happened. Now my propeller will not turn, the engine is running fine. I am very inexperienced but was told that the propeller should not free turn when out of the water in nuetral but mine currently will turn either direction freely. Help because its getting nice outside

Doesn't look good but::
Remove the prop and see if the shaft turns by hand. it shouldn't wobble.
Disconnect the shift cable and see if it shifts by hand. if not running you may have to rotate the prop to get it to shift.
If it shifts then you may have a cable or control problem.
Unfortunately rotating freely ie either direction isn't good.

I posted earlier that my boat propeller could be turned by hand both directions with a clicking noise. I thought I spun the prop but when I took it off completely, the rod is turning very slowly forward in drive and backwards in reverse. What is next for me troubleshooting now that we know it is not the prop

Took my propeller off thinking I had spun it. Instead the shaft is moving very slow. Any ideas

Ayuh,... Pull the lower unit off, 'n inspect the splines at the top of the shaft....

I'm guessin' either they're stripped, or the crankshaft is...
