Hi, I just removed two set of exhaust risers from twin 305 chevys from a 1986 Bayliner. I was wondering if anyone knows how to clean them up. Is there a vating process or what? thanks in advance. I don't think they're original. This site is a Great source of information.

Sand blasting with a softer media like chushed walnut shells or similar will clean them up pretty well..A wire brush on a drill works well also... If they are in rough condition (especialy inside) it might be worth it to replace them... ;)

I just had mine done and the mechanic soaked them in muriatic acid. This cleared some of the buildup but i found that i needed to actually force some of the buildup clear with a bicycle tire spoke.

Buy new ones. The small cost of the risers is cheaper than a new engine. As you eat away the rust in the cooling passages, you reduce the thickness of the wall between the cooling water and the exhaust. All it takes is one small pinhole to leak water back into the engine and it ain't worth it. If the risers are 86 models like the boat, its past time to change them.

I'll 3rd that, Been There, Done That, and Paid That! I hate when that happens. Good Luck..If they aren't too bad of shape, you can resale them to recover the cost of the new ones.
