We get very few planes within an earshot of where we live. I view them here and then can walk outside and see their lights.

Another thing that with this and 5 bucks you can get a cup of coffee.

We have a member here who has flown over the mountains to the north but he never honks or waves. :)

I get sucked into that site sometimes ... I can't tell if the VFR guys wind up on it, but the IFR private pilots show up on there. You can click on the airplane icon and get data on the actual airplane.

Sam, don't you get to watch all the hot rods flyin' in and out of Nellis?

Take a look late at night into morning sometime at Kentucky and Tennessee for some eye openers. Gives you an idea of how much freight UPS and FedEx handles a day.

Don't know where they get the data, but it looks like it shows anyone if they are on an actual filed flight plan......

It does not appear that military traffic shows up. My home sits almost dead center in a MOA and now and then I see some strange iron overhead and if I go right inside and look on my computer nothing shows up. Now and then I get a free airshow when a couple of fighter jockeys play around and try to get a lock on each other.

I've seen maps like that before, you would think they would all pile up in a heap. On very clear days and the if the sun is right, we can see the detailed underbelly of jet. Amazing considering how high they are.....

I'm glad you said clear days. Can't see nuttin' during a snow storm. LOL

I think the first time I saw the map was after 9/11. The news shows were showing the comparison of before and after the attacks when air traffic was grounded. They like to show it during times of heavy air travel, like around Thanksgiving.

Does anyone know what the orange planes mean? I clicked on some white and orange, but they all appeared to be commercial flights, some domestic and some foreign..

Go to the "about" section on the website ... there are several sources for data. ADS-B is their favorite (as it seems) and (I won't pretend to completely understand it) a relatively new tracking system that uses GPS data onboard from the transponder to communicate position via radio.

The suggestion is that it could replace radar someday.

The orange planes are getting data from the FAA ... the data is delayed a little so, they are not 100% accurate.

Rick, when were private planes required to install ADS-B?

I am getting the itch to get back into flying. Looking at maybe building an RV-14.

EDIT: looks like you don't need ADS-B until 2020 and only if you going to fly in controlled airspace which I will. My bet most people do unless they never fly into or near a city.

I was on Base last Friday to look at some work in a new F-35A hangar. There was a lone Thunderbird doing the smoke thing over the base.

I used to love seeing the A-10's out of Creech AFB fly over our small town but haven't seen them for a few years.

I know cutbacks is part of it. We used to get more traffic over us coming out of Nashville or Ft. Campbell headed down to Dobbins or Warner Robins, but it's died way down. I woulda' thought Nellis activity hung in though.

A10's a cool one to watch fly. Totally different than the fighters.

It'll likely be based on if you operate either in or below Class-B airspace, probably like the Mode 3/A requirement is now. I'll probably sell my airplane when I'm forced to install ADS-B (Give me another excuse to get a Big Formula!!)

RV-14 is a pretty nice airplane. I have only flown the RV-3 and it was pretty cool.......... I hear they all fly the same

I think most of the remaining A-10's are doing work in the Middle East, They still have a place and do a darned fine job.

I must live under the test flight path for C-130's out of Lockheed in Marietta. They are always overhead and have been flying out of Robbins since 1954! Plans are remove them from the USAF inventory in the 2030's after about 80 years of service. I first worked on them in 1964, when I thought they were old. LOL

The A-10 and C-130 both have a distinctive sound.

Since the 130's moved out of Nashville, we're not seeing many of them anymore. But we still see quite a few C17s headed down your way GA (mostly coming out of Memphis). Other than that it's all Black Hawks outta' Nashville and Ft. Campbell.

Raystown Lake is in the flyway for the military guys. They use it for training in the late fall through early spring. About a half dozen years ago I was hunting on the point of a ridgeline looking down a very steep drop into the lake when an A-10 came over the top of the ridge through the cut, banked hard, BELOW me, and headed down lake. Midway through the pilot's bank we made eye contact. I could clearly see all the gauges in the cockpit. It was awesome. The pilot looked a little startled, looking UP, eye to eye at about 30-40 yards with a redneck with a gun! Definitely an exhilarating feeling!
