Typical scam on Craig's. You contact them and if you buy the boat, you part with money and get no boat.

Some people are that dumb. Most aren't. But it happens.

Generally, the emotional part of getting a great deal gets people to pursue it and make bad decisions.

Heck yeah that is a scam to beat the band. With a 260hp 5.0 mpi (don't get the 250hp reference) that is an expensive boat.

Wow, you found the same exact boat with same photos and everything! The CL ad is in Rockingham, NC. Very fishy indeed.
Yeah, looks like someone stole the info off of the legit ebay auction to use in the CL ad.

Re: This has to be a scam, right?

This is how the scam works:
Hello (potential sucker), thanks for your interest in my (item I don't really have). The item is currently in storage in (far away place), and I need payment to get it here. I know the asking price was (a lot less than the item is worth) but if you send half the money, then I can have it shipped directly to you. When you are satisfied with the item, you can remit full payment.

You send money and never hear from the guy again.

That is one way the scam works. There are other ways where you send money via western union which is supposed to be held until you release the money upon receipt of goods, but WU does not hold money, so scanner gets your money and you have nothing. Never underestimate the power of greed.

Typical scam: The seller is "overseas" (often Military), and the boat is in storage. No way to get into the storage facility to inspect the purchase. A little money in a fake escrow account will get the boat out of storage and then you can decide if you want to complete the sale. The boat is fake, the escrow is fake, your deposit is gone.

Re: This has to be a scam, right?

one indicator of scams is the boat does not have registration numbers on the side. Almost all small boats in the USA have them, and the first 2 letters are the state.

Re: This has to be a scam, right?

the other scam is that the seller says "i have it listed on e-bay right now" click buy it now, and follwo the instructions......that way you get the e-bay buyer protection ...he gives you a link.....you click it.....and its a e=bay page ...click but in now....and another ebay page comes up with the proper instructions.

however....the e-bay pages are just poto shopped, and the listing numbers arent real.

Same boat I contacted about in July 2010. Contact them and they will tell you how they want to use a secure EBAY payment option. Then they will contact you about arranging for you to pick up or ship the boat to you. Tell them the same thing I told them...."Meet me in the parking lot of the local sheriffs office and we'll do the transfer there". F#&%@# scammers. I hope someday they catch these SOB's and persecute them to the fullest extent of the law. Just my 2 cents!

The boat is never in your area. Always in another city, in transport, in storage, blah blah blah etc.....Craigslist is full of these scams. If they are so hot to sell it, send them your phone and see if they call. No chance!

Be careful they are getting better and better.
I actually spoke to one of these scum bags. It was a very nice sounding lady in the US Army!
If you have two wits about you you can tell that this is total crap.
If you can't touch, smell, lick the boat being sold forget it!

The other side of this is that when you are a cash buyer or just a legit buyer for a large ticket item, the seller has the same mindset. They don't want to believe that you are not a scammer at worst or a time wasting tire kicker at best. I actually bought 2 cars off of Ebay way back when Ebay motors was new and shipped each from the coast to MN and I don't think I'd ever attempt it nowdays.

I actually had one scammer when I was looking this summer propose shipping the boat to me from it's location 1/2 hour away! I kept a couple of her emails (shown below) if it helps anyone out. That Chaparral was nice though LOL.

The boat is still for sale....It is in outstanding condition . There are no structural or electrical problems with this boat. Both hull and interior in nice condition .No mechanical issues with this engine at all. It starts easily and restart easily all day. It has ALWAYS been properly maintained and never run hard or abused. the boat gets it's oil changed twice a year. For the winter, the boat always gets acid washed on the bottom to remove any algee ..Trailer is in very nice condition and the tires are almost new with plenty of tread left. The seats and all the interior is in like new condition and has no fading, tears, stains ,mildew etc. It has a clear and clean title, free of all liens and encumberances.

I have to let you know that i left town a few days ago because i have to help my daughter organize her wedding, and i may stay here a while, but this is no problem because i`ll sell it through NAT services. I guess you used NAT before, if you didn`t let me know because i met people that never used it and i will explain how it works in detail. I want to sell it now because i need the money for my daughters wedding so if you are interested in buying it now let me know.

I said I was still interested but didn't understand the NAT process, so here's the process:

I'm pleased you are still interested. Like i said before i'll explain the Net Assistant Trader concept,
their website is www.netassistanttrader.com . They are a chain of ebay drop off stores and they offer their services for craigslist users too. I left the boat in their possession when i left and intended to sell it when i got back (if you ask why i'm selling it now when i'm not around), but the wedding costs too much and i need to sell it now to help my daughter get married.. They will take care of shipping, payment and title transfer(it is already signed by me and notarized so they are empowered to do this ). So if you want to purchase the boat, all you have to do is to register on their website. After you are registered with them an invoice will be sent to you. There you will find out more details about this sale like how to complete the payment, shipping process, insurance, etc .Afterward you have to complete the payment. They receive the payment and start the shipping process. You receive the boat and you have 10 days to inspect it and see if it's exactly as described. If you decide to keep it, you let them know and they will transfer the payment to me, if you decide to return it, they will give you a full refund back and return the item on my cost. So you can be sure the boat is exactly as described because i wouldn't sell something that i know it will be returned and loose extra money. The shipping cost is already included in the price listed on craigslist so you don't have to worry about that. The process is very simple, it probably looks a little complicated from what i explained but it's not and for a better understanding of how their service works you can check out their "Selling on Craigslist" page. I would advise you to read the Selling on Craigslist page before you register so you can be sure you understand how the process works. Let me know if you are still interested and if you have questions please ask, no problem. Also, if you don't want to register on their website for any reason, you can send me your full name and shipping address and i will forward it to them, but it's better if you register yourself.

Thank you

PS: I am sorry for the long email but i couldn't explain the process in less words.

Here's my last reply to her which she never replied to:

You listed the boat as being located in Akron and I live less than 1/2 hour away from there, there's no shipping needed. Since you left it with "Net Trader". I'd be happy to meet them in person for payment and transfer of title. You must think I'm naive to propose me sending that company $8600 "and wait for shipment" LOL. How about you send me $5000 as proof of your credibility, and then I'll refund it when I see the boat?
Sound good? Hope "The Wedding" goes well!
