I am getting ready to put the fuel pump back on the engine, and well it did have the spacer and a gasket on it origionally but is it really necessary to put the gasket back on as thin as it is with that thick spacer ? This came with it when I removed it so is the spacer actually taking up about 1/8" for taking up reach of the arm and preventing it from causing some form of damage to the cam? With this in mind it would be necessary to install it, but for those of you who have the 470 and with it being an 88 year model of engine maybe we can put our heads together and come up with a solution. I know the GM's use a similar setup with their mechanical fuel pump, being as though they run off the cam ....4.3, 305, 350, 454, and even some of the larger truck (gasoline) engines as well. This one has me kinda stumped as to what actually belongs.

As I understand it you need the spacer. Check out this thread, about 5 posts down: http://www.breezeworks.net/cgi-bin/...orumID=1&TopicID=1519&PagePosition=1&get=last I do know that someone here installed a new fuel pump on their 470 without the spacer and had damage to the cam from the excess pressure on the arm. I would assume that it was on there for a reason. I guess I am not sure what your problem is.

Thanks Stony for that link it clarified things rather well. By using the spacer it not only saves the cam, but also it also supposedly reduces fuel pressure from a moderate 15lbs to 5lbs, and also prevents flooding issues as well. Thanks again for that link.
