I found a Carolina Skiff with the Honda BF90 4 stroke. Boat and motor are 2001 models. Any thoughts on this motor? The guy cranked it for me today but it took a little longer than I expected. It's like the motor would hit but not crank. At last it did crank and ran fine with no misses or sputters but it took so long I thought he was going to burn up the starter. Is this as normal as he said it is? He claims it take a minute to start these motors.

Fuel injection engines do start a little difficult the first time after a longer stay, then they start easily. I think it's normal.

This is NOT a fuel injected engine. There are things you need to do to establish, choke, and throttle advance on a cold start and that varies with the remote control you are equipped with.If you have a traditional side mount control that choke is activated by lifting the warmup lever all the way up.If a binnacle you will need to advance the the throttle and use the toggle choke at the key switch. These are not hard starting engines.

That makes more sense than what he was saying. He didn't give it any throttle or pull the choke knob on the side of the motor. Thank you for the input. The motor has 300hrs according to the meter. Is this good or bad?

hondon-- do you have to pull the lever on the side control all the way up and hold it to activate the choke while cranking or just pull it up and let go of it?

chock is used by pushing in usually. i think Honda are auto
that lever is the fast idle, warm up lever

i have re-built more Honda carbs this year than more in he past

i tell my customers to drain the gas

If you have a Honda side mount control ,on a cold start you will need to lift that warm up lever all the way up .At that point you should hear the choke plates snap shut and the throttle will be advanced. If you have a binnacle mount with a toggle choke ,that requires a bit more coordination. You will need to activate the choke and the throttle only feature at the remote all at the same time without letting this thing freewheel. You get the hang of that very quickly after the first time it happens. If all that is happening properly that engine should jump to life very quickly.

Those Honda 90's are very hard to start if you don't advance the throttle.

Make sure you pump the priming bulb until it gets hard, before you try to start the motor. Three hundred hours is very little use. The motor is not even broken in yet! Sounds like the last owner didn't really know the boat all that well! Make sure that when you run all of the fuel out of the carbs by running the motor on the flushing cups and then disconnect the fuel connector at the motor. The motor will die after a few minutes, then kill the ignition and disconnect the cups, you're done till next time!
