I have been looking to repower my 14' mfg gypsy after discovering that the lower unit on my evinrude is toast. I found a guy on craigslist that has a 1966 merc 50 hp with controls and harness for $500. He says he ran it last season, but repowered with a newer one with power tilt and trim. It has a new starter and distributer cap.

Is a motor like this worth $500 if in good running condition? Is there anything in particular I should be looking out for?

All the normal stuff, compression/spark/etc., plus check the condition of the wires under the cowl.

If I couldn't check the lower unit oil for water by pulling the drain plug, I wouldn't even consider buying it. You'd probably wind up in the same place you were in---a bad lower unit..

There is a reason he upgraded. If you are going to put alot of hours on this motor, take a pass. I have an old outboard and they can be a little finicky and reliability is an issue.

See if he will go lower, you might be one of the only shoppers he is aware of and just wants some cash for this.
