Thin spray coming out the cooling hole

I've been fixing up a '95 40 Force. I've changed the impeller and it seems to be working. The lower unit cooling channels were full of dirt dauber nests. I have water coming out of the upper hole, but it's not the stream it should be, its a fine spray. It seems restricted. When I had the lower unit off I put a garden hose on the orafice and ran water up the cooling water tube, I never got a good stream and I don't with the boat running. The impeller is new and I have a good stream coming out of a lower hole.

Yesterday I ran the boat for the first time, it ran fine but the Cylinder head temp gauge was innop. Coupled with the lack of cooling stream I opted to just shut it down for the day since I could not tell if it was overheating.

I read here that you can run weed whacker line up the hole. Is there anything I can dammage by doing this? Can you actually get whacker line up into the head. It just seems like I'm missing a dauber somewhere. This boat was stored outside for 5 years. Any advice would sure be appreciated.

I think what your seeing is the water mist coming out the exhaust. This is normal. I you run your engine for a wile and and the temp alarm did not go off your probably not over heating. Did you check out adding a tell tail thread. It gives you a better idea on how much water is relay coming through your engine.

You wont hurt anything if you tried your weed whacker string trick.

Hmmm, maybe I'm making a bad assumption. I'm assuming a solid pee stream will come out of the hole just below the bottom cowling. Can anyone out there with a 40 or 50 HP Force tell me what comes out of the upper hole? Maybe nothing is wrong. I guess I'll see when the temp gauge gets fixed.

The spitter hole is just that a spitter hole. The Force engine does not shoot a stream of water like some other outboards.

Thank you, thank you, thank you for that information. That makes me feel a whole world better. I guess my only gripe now is just a broken temp gauge. Boy it's amazing how a basic assumption can get you to chase your own tail for a while. Spitter hole huh, I'll be soaked in shellac.

Thanks again for your help.

Re: Thin spray coming out the cooling hole

just want to confirm what I am reading. I just bought a boat with an 87 Force 50 which appears to have very little use. Upon starting the motor with the bottom immersed, I would see a heavy mist being emitted from the two pee holes, if that's what they are. Is this the normal state of operation of this motor? It is not equipped with a temp gauge so I would not know if it was overheating.

That is normal operation for FORCE outboards. The holes you see on the leg above water line are idle pressure relief snouts, they are designed to reduce exhaust back pressure when engine is operating at idle and low RPM. Some motors have decent amount of water coming out it, others just fine mist mixed with the exhaust. As long as the head is not too hot (you should be able to place your hand on the motor head without being burned) you are OK.

Re: Thin spray coming out the cooling hole

I concur with what others have said. I bought my Tracker new and it was pointed out by my salesman that the top port only sputters water, not the tell-tale stream that you see with others. I've just recently found this site to do some troubleshooting. I had some concerns about cooling and such but there is a post at the top of the list about installing a Tell-Tale that I'll be doing before the weekend. I've got a 97 model 40 so I can't tell for sure how similar but if they are even remotely similar you should have a brass or silver pipe plug that sits atop your block. From what I've read and viewed in pictures that is a port to allow hook up of a water temp guage but can also allow a tell-tale install. As for me, I think the tell-tale would be a much better guage of whether the pump is functioning than that spittle we have. I'd take a look at the installing a tell-tale post, but installing a 1/4 barbed nipple and a little bit of tubing seems to be all you really need to add it. I'm planning on porting mine out the side of the lower cowling so I can see it while I'm running if need be. Nipple, couple feet of tubing and a grommet for the cowling less than $10 bucks. Knowledge that I'm getting water to the block on a regular basis Priceless.

I just bought a 89 Force 50 and all I get is exhaust out of the spitter holes when in a bucket of water. No water mist at all. The guy I bought it from said he winterized it by running it for a couple of minutes without any water. I'm thinking I might need a Impetter too but I didn't see the part on this web site. Might Have to Look around.

Portwill363 i would definitely check the water pump. Just a word of advice never never run your out board with no water.

Re: Thin spray coming out the cooling hole

I ordered one, and a manual off ebay, and a thermostat with a gasket. Will also clean out the carb. Been busy working on the trailer replacing leaf springs as one was broken. Also need to repair a small hole in the keel with some putty stuff i got at the marine store. It's a fixer-upper but i like to work on things....
