:) It's that time of year again and sorry to say that "Thin Ice" !!!! is starting to take it's toll!!! Three people I have heard of today, young girl goes thru ice and father tries to save her and they both succumbed to the frigid waters and tonight a young boy!!!

It's time to talk to your young kids and grand kids about how the ice may not be safe!!! Don't blow this warning off, you may be saving a life!!!

Ice water is deadly, whether you go through the ice or fall out of a boat.

Be safe out there.

Re: THIN ICE

My wife and I discussed this one and concluded that this dad was brain dead. A school board member none the less, not that is a qualifier of the persons judgement ability. What the heck are people like this dude thinking? Good God.

I should not post any response, but damn it, it hurts, and vilifies my and mines position that "*****" responsible parents are indeed warranted. Just say NO to the kids badgering requests of whatever may be questionable wants at the time. DERN>>>>>>>>>

Re: THIN ICE

Yeah me and my dad were talking about it today for awhile....

1. Can't blame the kids, they most likely didnt know that it was dangerous.

2. The dad had to be more responsible.....Its been a cold week here, but not nearly cold enough or long enough to produce ice safe for anything.

I feel horrible for the family.....especially when the deaths could have and should have been avoided. Even when I am sure the ice is safe I still make sure people know exactly where I am and carry those "life picks" with me etc.

I don't know how long they had lived in the North, but I it baffles me that this happens every year.
I wouldn't go hunting in grizzly territory with a package of bloody meat in my pocket. I won't go out on a frozen lake until the ice is thick enough.
Both are "COMMON SENSE", of which there is too much lacking lately.

With the internet and availability of information in today's world, how long would it have taken to do a search on "ice safety" or something like that. Even if they didn't have a computer, go to the library.
Life is too precious and the child's death is a tragedy. She trusted her father, as children should be able to.
Sad, indeed.

AK Chappy

It’s a link soliciting money, nothing about what happened to your friend.
Noel,
All it says about what happened to your friend is that he died in a tragic boating accident.
While this is saddening, and you and his family have my deepest condolences, perhaps you should remove the link. Solicitation, even with good intentions, will only earn a ZAP.

AK Chappy

Chappy,

The scholership hit it's 5k goal years ago, I just wanted to put out the link. There is nothing to solicit.

The combination was a Paddle boat, 2am with 35degree water, no pfd's. They thought they would be just fine.

Re: THIN ICE

In our village they were going to pass a law outlawing ice skating on the stormwater detention ponds. The risk is of bad ice on these ponds all winter long depending on weather conditions, water runoff and such. Would I go on one? NO Would I want my kids on these ponds? NO This is a decision for parents to make for their kids. Dane County sheriffs used to declare the lakes safe in the winter but no longer do so. Guess why? Ice is never completely safe

Re: THIN ICE

Ice, especially to the novice can be deadly.
I had the great foutune of only having to spend a year in great lakes.
in january of 88 or so me and a fellow petty officer could resist it no more. we had to walk on the ice shelf on lake michigan. as the navy base had standing orders forbidding sailors on the ice we cruised up to the other side of waukegan and started ice hiking, was a beutiful day, plenty of sunshine and no wind.
had not been out long when some local came up and asked us where our "ice" sticks were. I aid what the L is an ice stick. he had his and explained what it was for, he looked about a second, wlked a few feet over and proceded to jam is stick through the ice. he was then kind enough to lead us back off.
seems neither of us southern boys knew enough about thermal currents and such.
I have since done a lot of cold water training but have never been on the ice again other than a rink.
snow covered Ice is deadly as well. its not something for the novice to undertake.
the tragedies up north are sad though. even sadder cause they were totally preventable.
