I have an '83 Johnson V-4 90 H.P. outboard which recently has developed a drip of what looks like a heavy greasy oil. The greasy oil almost looks like grease that has become saturated with water. I did not notice this until I started to leave the motor in the trimmed position while not in use. The leak seems to be starting at the top of shaft where it meets the motor head. Trying to find out if anyone has any ideas. Thank you

Re: Thick oil leak on Johnson V-4 90H.P.

Had the same problem with my 1995 Johnson 88 spl which is the 90 without the vro[mix my own fuel oil].Ended up disconnecting the fuel line from the engine and making sure the throttle was in the off position. {MY] thought being with the throttle open and fuel pressure still on the carb that as pressure changed fuel/oil flowed into the crankcase where either the fuel washed down the drive shaft or the fuel evaporated leaving the oil to set in the lower crankcase and when it reached the right level run down the shaft..Anyway it solved my problem,an hasn't done it in the past year or so.good luck.
