Hey everyone, a little bit of some SHT and somewhat of some questions to become a more informed boater. The day started out fantastic. The boat performed flawlessly. We decided to break out the kneeboard. I was getting pretty cocky because the previous weekend I had finally decided to break out of the safety of the boat wake and started getting a little more comfortable with getting air off the wake. Well we got going pretty good, and I decided to whip out of the wake and swing back with the boat causing the maximum pull on the rope. I got air all right, then caught a corner of the board and smashed my face into the water. Apparently I perferated my ear drum and wrenched my neck pretty bad. Not a big deal, just figured I had gotten water in my ear, so I go at it again, and head back in.
I meet some friends on the beach and we have a cookout while my brother, his girlfriend, and a good friend take the boat out while I'm hanging out with my friends. Not a big deal, my brother drives the boat primarily anyway, so he knows what he's doing for the most part. So I'm sitting at a table with my friends and I see the boat come up and all three of them get out and walk towards me. My brother starts with "We've got a problem." My heart just dropped, because my brother and I WRECK stuff, like REALLY bad. It's primarily got to do with my poor luck. Then he said "Relax... We're just out of gas." I put 15 gallons in the thing, we hadn't been out that long. We went to the gas station got a good deal on a 5 gallon tank and filled it up. (Gas stations on the lake charge like $25 for a gallon can, I found this 5 gallon one for $14!) So we didn't have a lot of gas, but enough where they decided to go a few laps skiing around the lake before my friends and I went for an evening cruise.
So my brother and this friend start skiing and it's getting to the evening time. They were working on this manuver where they would try and whip his friend into shore on the skiis, which unfortunately involved them getting pretty close to the no-wake zone. No one was around except for my boat. Ultimately, not the brightest idea, but we've all been there, am I right? My boat is stopped as our friend is coming in on the skiis. All of the sudden I see this pontoon boat coming straight for my boat, almost runs right into it. I'm sitting on the shore watching this whole debacle. The pontoon stops and starts yelling at my brother. He was apparently ticked that they were that close to the no-wake zone being dumb. My brother told the guy it was stupid and they'll stop, but the guy was pretty insistent that he could give them both a ticket. This guy apparently lived on the lake, wasn't any sort of water Sheriff. This looked like a plain old Joe with a fancy upscale pontoon boat. My question is, is this real? Are there like citizen water police that are designated from people who live on this public lake? I just thought it odd, maybe like the guy was trying to scare my brother by giving him a ticket (which wasn't scaring him obviously).
So that's my big weekend SHT.

Some police water units do have some sort of auxillary. I'd worry more that the guy's brother is a real cop.

But as you said "Ultimately, not the brightest idea..."

citizens arrest, you go to the magistrate present your case, along with any witnesses and evidence, if he or she feels you have a case they will have you swear out a warrant, but this is not ticket giving

"pontoon boat coming straight for my boat, almost runs right into it."

I would have told him "Give me the ticket and give yourself one for reckless endangerment... and give yourself another for being stupid while your at it!"

what a jerk. he can't write tickets. Sounds like he can't stand seeing people have fun, either. Skiing to and from a beach is fun.

Except perhaps this is what was going on: some no wake zones are not for other boat's safety but to prevent erosion or other damage to the shore, banks, docks and moored boats. Maybe that was his concern.

Also, I have to say, you were tempting fate by running out of gas, adding only 5 gallons, and going back out skiiing in a large boat then an evening cruise. At least, I would have poured 4/5 of the gas in the boat and held a gallon reserve. Or spend time while on shore whittling paddles out of driftwood.

Thanks for the responses. When we go out, we do try and be model boaters, but everyone has their lapses in judgement. I think he probably was concerned about the erosion. With the way the water levels have been on that lake over the past few years, the beach areas tend to really take a beating. At the same time it's not worth wrecking a boat over and injuring someone. Basically all of us learned something from the mistakes that had taken place that day. Haha!
