I OWN A 1999 MERCURY 150 EFI THAT I HAVE OWN SINCE IT WAS NEW. IT HAS BEEN AN AWESOME ENGINE. IT IS USED MAINLY IN SOUTH LOUISIANA IN SALT WATER IN THE WARM PART OF THE YEAR. DOWN HERE IS ABOUT 8 MONTHS OUT OF THE YEAR. WATER TEMP IS AROUND 70 TO 85 DEGREES. I HAVE BEEN AN ANTI THERMOSTAT PERSON DUE TO SALT WATER EATING UP METAL.I TOOK MINE OUT RIGHT AFTER I PURCHASED THIS ENGINE.IT HAS BEEN RUNNING GREAT FOR THE LAST 15 YRS. BUT I TOOK HER OUT IN 35 DEGREE WEATHER,WATER TEMP 50 DEGREES AND THE GIRL WAS RUNNING CRAZY. TEMP GAUGE NEVER LEFT 100 DEGREES.IS IT TIME TO PUT THOSE STATS BACK IN. THANKS FOR ANY COMMENTS

Yes. Put them back. Theyre cheap and they work. What more could you want?

A thermostat is cheap. It safes the engine due to a relatively short warm up time. if it gets stucked due to salt or better "said" calcium carbonate layer (if it realy would get blocked) you can just drop it into a glass of water with one or two coffee machine cleaner tabs for 10 minutes.
A thermostate (and the cooling channels in the engine as well) gets blocked with calcium layer if the engine is running too hot. This will start at approx. 85°celsius (185°F)
With a nice running engine you should be fare away from building up calcium layers.... otherwise all of the guys running their boats in salt water would have problems. do they?

I know what he's talking about and its not calcium carbonate. Ive pulled several motors apart that had rotten thermostats due to being run in saltwater or brackish water . The salt water rots them away and they fall apart and get stuck open or close. Change them every other year or so and flush it after running in salt and the motor will be happier.

One reason I like stats in the Merc Vs is that the upper starboard cylinder can't completely fill if the stats are missing leading to overheating of that cylinder. I like stats in other engines as well besides the benefits they offer.

Got ya, if it does rott away, it could be comming from no metallic contact to the block and his annodes?
