Thermostat

Does a boat really need one can you run with out one the reason I'm asking is becasue when I winterized my boat had trouble removing my thermostat and ripped it out and before I go and buy another one for 18.00 I was wondering if its really needed its not like I have a heater on my boat.

The thermosat is supposed to help the motor maintain the correct operating temperature. If you don't have one the motor may never get up to the correct temperature. Running to cold can cause problems with wear on bearings and such.<br /><br />Yes you need one.

Not only that but some thermostats create a little back pressure in the block to help mix the hot water with the cold and keep the temp even throughout the block (no hot spots) cold water will run through the block like a river not cooling the outer banks.

and you will find out that the motor runs better when fairly hot, as in the normal op range ;)

I have also heard(in cars anyway) that not having a thermostat can also cause an engine to overheat because the coolant circulates to fast without a thermostat to cool the engine.<br /><br />I had a car overheating.<br />Changed the thermostat and it didnt fix the problem.<br /><br />I installed a new thermostat and it worked good last long time!
