I think I have a thermostat problem on my 1994 V6 Yamaha 225 and would like to replace it. I have looked into the themostat and it seems that all it is a spring and a small black plug. Does this sound right and were can I get a replacement? I I went out yesterday and it seems that the Thermostat is staying open. I tested it with a infrared tester after running at WOT for about 8 minutes on lake and then idled around for another 5 minutes and tested and block never exceeded 121 degrees. Is that Normal?

A spring and a small black plug ... that sounds like the poppet valve, not the thermostats. The poppet valve is located at the base of the block, there is a water hose attaced to it. If you are used to working on cars, you might think this is where the t-stat is (the housing looks similar).

There are two thermostats, one on each cylinder bank, they are located at the top of each bank and are covered by a cover with 4 screws.

I can't remember the operating temp for these Yamahas, I think is is around 130-140 degrees. But I could be wrong. Let me know if we are on the same page with the t-stats.
