I pulled my old thermostat out and it looks like it has a rubber seal around the outer edge. The new one does not have this seal and the parts guy says it does not show one in the book. My manual does not mention this either and the picture is not clear enough to tell.

My question: Does the thermostat require this rubber seal around it?

Any help would be appreciated.

Re: Thermostat Replacement 50hp

I noticed the same thing with my 87 50hp. I just rebuilt the entire top end, bored, changed the impeller and the thermostat. I've put about 10 break in hrs on it over the past couple of days and everything is great so far...no overheating whatsoever. Just be sure to put the new one in correctly according to your manual...it will fit either end first. If anyone else can give a definite answer on this though, we'd both appreciate it! :D

Did you install the new thermostat without the seal or did you use the old seal?
