thermostat question

I have a merc. MCM228 serial # 4930267. I found that there was no thermostat in the engine. I have everything to put on in. Does it go in the upper housing where the hoses connect or does it go in the housing at the engine block. The bolts that hold the housing holds both places to the engine.

What problems should I keep my eyes open for when running with the themostat in? The boat ran good without, it just never came up to temp.

It goes on top.......
Just look for any leaks & check that there are no parts or hoses that are severly hot.....​
