it should be at the top of the cylider head, above the spark plug, but if its peeing, its NOT the thermostat.

if its peeing, how do you know its overheating? do you have guages?

Well when I run it a WOT the overheat light comes on and if I kill it once its been running it takes almost an hour for it to cool down and start again I figured it was a cooling problem and to check the thermostats

I realize this is an old topic but just in case someone has similar problems: The thermostat and poppet valve on my 60 hp 3 cylinder Mariner are located under the side cover. There seems to be disagreement as to existance of these two items but the holes for them are there. I purchased a repair kit that includes the poppet valve, and thermostat and they fit the holes so they are now installed. People tend to remove the thermostat and poppet valve when overheating problems occur but this is not recommended in my shop manual. The year of the engine is 1987 or 1988 and still runs well.

John, I realize this is a very old topic, but maybe you or someone will see it and respond. I also have a 1988 Mariner 60 that I am going thru. I removed the side cover and found the casting locations for the tstat and poppet valve which had been removed. I need to find part numbers for these. The Mercury parts book is no help, not listed. I'm afraid without these installed the flow will short circuit water to the exhaust leaving the upper cylinder starved.
Thanks!
