I can not for the life of me find any thermostat on this Mariner Outboard engine. Even the Seloc manual has nothing on it..! The manual does show a 4cylinder thermostat location on the cylinder head for one model but my engine cylinder head is bare, just four spark plugs and a temp bulb/probe location. No thermostat & relief valve cover whatsoever where the book shows one..? Anybody out there no anything about this by chance?

One thing my motor does is fouls out plugs in about and hour and I was hoping maybe it was running to cool. Now I cannot find a thermostat! Is it possible this model does not have one? Even the parts guy at a Mariner parts supply could not locate one on the parts schematic. Just seems strange not to have one.

Another problem I am also having is my outboard is not reaching full rpm all the time. I will run it full open without reaching full rpm but then sometimes out of the blue it will jump up to full rpm for a few minutes running like it should then drop off again, it is more off than on. It is like an intermittent ignition/electrical problem somewhere?? I have dried everything out checked the leads, wiring, grounds etc but I can not run the problem down. I am in Central America with it and I had a so called Mercury shop here check it but they are real shade tree here with virtually zero diagnostic tools, did not even have a timing light or know what one was I think. They just stuck it in a water tank listened to it and said everything was fine which I realized was not true as soon as I started running the motor on my boat again. Pulling the flywheel tomorrow to check there. Have one spare coil to try also. Any tips appreciated. I am mechanically inclined just not much experience with outboards.

Much thanks for any input

Paul,

Your engine does not have a thermostat. If you're fouling plugs you may have the wrong plugs. They should be NGK BUHW-2 or Champion L78V.

As for the problem with not making full rpm... check that all the mechanical linkages are free to move. Make sure they are nicely lubricated on their pivots and not catching anywhere. Check that the ignition system can make a nice fat blue spark jump about 1/2", at cranking speed, on each cylinder. You could have a weak coil, or switch box. Also the wrong plugs could do this too. It could also be a fuel problem... When was the last time the fuel pump diaphrams were replaced? (They should be done every year). What about the carbs? When were they last cleaned out?

One last thing, bin the seloc and get a factory manual....
