Thermostat gasket confusion

I have a 1983 merc 228.
I bought a new thermostat and gasket set and one gasket is normal (2 bolt holes and a hole in the center for water.) The second gasket is solid with the exception of the bolt holes. I have checked my manuals I can't find any reference to this. Has any one used this?

Yes I have a top cover but something doesn't seem wright.
I have two manuals but neither show this.
Do you know of an online manual that might?

Wild guess....Seloc and Clymer?

Those are about worthless.....

You want a Merc Factory manual...

I'm not thrilled with those manuals either, but I thik this gasket may not be for my application.

That sure isn't what it SHOULD be. Time to head to your local Merc dealer and order the right gaskets.
The thermostat is SUPPOSED to be the right one.
