Thermostat, do I have to use one?

Does one really need a thermostat? Isn't simply to warm up the engine faster?

Actually, that is one function of the thermostat. The other is to maintain a stable operating temperature in the engine.

Stress is cumulative and it is a good thing not to stress out engines anymore than they are already.
