I just replaced the water pump and thermostat and the thermostat housing is leaking right by the thermostat even with new thermostat gasket. Can I just use Permatex to get a better seal?

We will allow it this time, but don't let it happen again
As Scott said, best to find out why it is leaking. I had a similar issue with an aftermarket t-stat housing, so doubling up on the gaskets and use of permatex did the trick. If everything is OEM, then maybe take a look at why it is leaking.
