thermosata test?

I have a 50hp johnson model # 50372r Im getting a fine mist out of the exhaust ports. I know this motor has no tell tale. How do you test the thermostat. thanks

Remove it and put in a pot of real hot water. You will see it open if it works and then close as you cool the water. Installed you should be able to hold your hand on top of the head for about a three count. If you can it is working. Best of luck. Rick.

Put a thermometer in the water. It should open around 140?.

Thanks fellas. The heads getting hot in about 2 minutes and i can see water trying to come from the ehaust. I think the thermostats stuck. I atleast want to eliminate that before I pull the lower unit and replace the waterpump.
